Overview
Business schools are complex and dynamic institutions, serving a unique range of stakeholders in a highly competitive market. Senior managers are under increasing pressure to act strategically, meet high customer expectations and maximise resources to help business schools realise their full potential. There are common challenges and shared experiences whether coming from a private business school, post-92 or research intensive institution. This diverse and topical programme provides participants with a deeper and broader understanding of these challenges in a highly supportive, informal environment.
Who should attend
Business school professional staff at senior managerial level, and those aspiring to such positions. Senior Managers who will benefit from the opportunity to reflect outside the usual day to day demands and distractions.
How is the course organised?
The programme is based on creating a group of between 10-16 participants who commit to attend all six sessions. Places are offered on a first come, first serve basis. The sessions will not be available for separate one-off bookings.
Where
Sessions will normally take place in London and run from lunchtime to lunchtime. Accommodation will be reserved in a hotel close to the ABS offices.

- Session 2 - Thursday 28 and Friday 29 April 2011
- Session 3 - Thursday 9 and Friday 10 June, 2011
- Session 4 - Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 September 2011
- Session 5 - Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 November 2011
Cost
The cost of the 2011 programme is £3,500 per person.
This is payable in two instalments, an initial deposit of £1,750, a second payment of £1,750 at the commencement of the programme. Alternatively, on request we can invoice the full cost of the programme of which full payment must be received prior to the commencement of the programme.
Refreshments, dinner, overnight accommodation and breakfast are all covered by the course fee.
Programme
Six key themes are explored in six, 24 hour, small and externally facilitated group sessions, based in London. Specific requirements of individual participants can also be addressed. There is also a visit to two different UK business schools.
The sessions are spread over the year and include: plenaries, discussion groups and action learning sets together. The course is externally facilitated with each session including briefings and presentations from qualified experts from Higher Education and elsewhere.
The programme is highly participatory and encourages sharing and comparing of challenges and good practice.
Session 1: Strategic Planning
The first session sets the scene by looking at the external policy envirnment and how this impacts on strategic planning in business schools. We then move on to discuss:
- Organisational and administrative structures
- Change management
- Autonomy within business schools
Session 2: Resources
Session two focuses on finance and resources:
- Sources of finance and management
- Funding flows
- Budgets
- Workload Allocation
Session 3: Visits
Visits to at least 2 UK business schools with a focus on their structures and strategic processes
Session 4: Quality
This session covers:
- Quality improvement
- Assessment
- Accreditation
- Benchmarking
- Customer service
Session 5: Human Resource Management & delegates choice
Session 5 includes:
- Recruitment, Retention and Management of staff
- Performance management
- Motivation and Staff Development
- Dealing with difficult people
- Working with academic staff
In addition, there will be a special session created around a topic of the delegates' choice.
Session 6: Communication
The final session concentrates on:
- The strategic importance of PR and marketing
- Dealing effectively with the media
- Internal communication
